School Journey to Majorca, 1966
Roy Goodge (1963-1967)
For fifteen days in April 1966, boys from Barnsbury journeyed to Majorca, along with Mr. Chamberlain and Mr Walton and their wives. My classmate, Derek Marjoram and myself were the only third years on the trip, and at that age we felt kind of inferior, but after just a few days we all mingled well.
We were staying in a resort called C’an Pastilla at the Hotel Gaby, soon to be renamed ‘scabby’ due to the poor condition of the place. In preparation for the journey, parents, teachers and schoolboys attended a meeting where it was stated that smoking, drinking and gambling would not be tolerated.
By the end of the first week we found a bar that didn’t mind having a load of English kids milling around and we were soon joined by our teachers who entered into the fun by smoking, drinking and playing poker with us. If my memory serves me correctly, Mr Walton cleaned us out.
However, the old cliche applied and it was understood that, ‘what goes on, on tour, stays on tour.’
