Barnsbury Boy - John Prysky - 1953-1957
John Prysky
I was at Barnsbury Central Boys School from 1953 to 1957 (4 years).
My name was John Cardoza then, due to my mother getting divorced from my Canadian Father after the Second World War. She remarried and gave me my new stepfather's name which was Cardoza. It wasn't until I left school and had to get work documents such as a national insurance number, that I found out. I then used my proper name of John Prysky from then onwards.
I have various memories of my time at Barnsbury such as catching the 611 trolley bus to Holloway Road and getting off at Eden Grove in my early years, and later when my parents moved to Kings Cross, travelling up the Caledonian Road past Pentonville prison when there was a hanging taking place. My stepfather was an ardent Arsenal fan and took me to the first of many matches at Highbury. I still am a gooner and go quite regularly to the Emirates stadium to matches. In those days replays for cup matches were played in midweek afternoons and many a time half of the school bunked off to go to Highbury as you could get in without paying at half time because they opened the gates.
I remember Mr. Davies (The Bonk). Many a time I visited his office for the cane. Mr. Mathews, Mr. Rice, Mr. McHugh, Mr. Madley and of course Rozzer Richards.
I used to play for the school football team and Datson house along with Jack Clogg and John Bewley. I also did Boxing, Athletics and Cricket.
I am in touch with Jack Clogg but haven't seen John Bewley for some time.
That's enough for now as I could on for a long time.
