Schoolboys – Where are they now?
Names that senior Old Barnsburian Tony Lawrence (1951-1957) can recall are:
Tony Lawrence – really nice bloke although a loner...........!!! Played football for school and district (Islington) as well. Did not enjoy school life at Barnsbury. Father and uncle both went to the school when it was located elsewhere and they could not understand how it had become such a grotty place both educationally and structurally. We had some really lousy teachers who kept on telling us what a useless bunch we were and what a waste of time it was trying to teach us anything. Yes, we had some decent ones like “Bunny” Warren (Art and Biology), Page (Geography), Brown (Technical Drawing) and Madely (Religious Instruction and PE). Never did get my Dad to come to a parent’s evening. Glad to leave in 1957 and NEVER went back!
Tony Bertani – his parents had a grocery shop in Hampstead, then a cafe in Archway. Best mate at school but lost contact when we left.
Leslie Jonathon – really good wicket keeper. Could play cricket and table tennis with either hand.
Michael Hughes – one of my pals at and after school. Lost contact about 1960. Now lives in Canada.,
Ray Spiers - believed past away. Glass eye, lived in Walthamstow for a while.
Roy Magwood – was living in South Wales.
Dennis Dent – boxer. Lived near Essex Road, Islington.
Ronnie Cook – boxer. Ginger haired, lived near Essex Road, Islington.
Brian 'Gus' Buttons – good goalkeeper; played for school, district and London Boys (at Wembley).
Peter Shreeves – good all round athlete and good bloke. Played football for school, district (Islington), London Butts, then Barnet and Reading, and went professional later, and even managed Spurs at one time.
Johnny Ellis – played for Islington boys at football, also Barnet FC.
Don Verea – moved on from BBS – too intelligent ……
Sidney Sprigg – good at ballroom dancing.
John Edwards
‘Doc’ Gilbert – cannot recall his proper Christian name, but he had a school bag that looked like the ones doctors carried.
Freddie Dale – tallest kid in class.
Fred Luther – believe he went on to be a copper.
Michael Barett
Frank Patmore
Ron Mayo
Michael C. Michael – littlest lad at school from the time he joined to the time he left. His family were all short, but lovely people. I got six of the best for shoving him in a dustbin. He could be a right pain sometimes.
Roy James – loved his fishing and was not averse to bunking off for a day’s fishing. Don’t know how he did it as he came to school on his bike with his fishing gear, signed in for registry then cleared off. Bit of a lad – think he left under a cloud after a run-in with one of the teachers.
Bob Randall
Gerry Pelosi
Dennis Julian
Malcom Shearer
Chris Duffy
Brian Roseman
Leslie Thynne – lived in a prefab off Drayton Park Road his dad was a mate of my father and also went to Barnsbury.
Norman Toulin
Robert 'Bob' Butler
Patrick Colbert – was living in Scotland.
David Nye
George East
Brian Thomas
Brian Elkin
Mike Ezra – lightly built lad, but very good at PE. Good friends with Patrick Colbert.
Leslie Jonathon – one of my best pals even after leaving school, but lost contact about 1960.
Roy Jones
Roy Conquest – what a “quiff” he had!
Paul Humphries - poor old Paul. Remember him well. Bullied simply because he was clever and academic but useless at sports. We got on well and I could feel for him. Died of pneumonia whilst still attending school, but after I talked to his mother and father it seemed that he did not have the will to live because of his school life. Very sad.
